Brake fluid testing and maintenance

Brake fluid is something that is overlooked and should be routinely tested. You can cause serious damage to your brake system if the fluid is contaminated. How does your fluid get contaminated? Brake fluid is hygroscopic, this means that it naturally absorbs moisture from the air over time. As moisture content increases, the boiling point decreases. During hard braking ( braking down a hill or towing) your fluid will super heat. This could potentially cause it to boil, creating air in your hydraulic brake system, resulting on a loss of your brakes or reduced stopping power. That could be very dangerous. Moisture contamination can also cause internal corrosion of expensive brake components such as ABS modules, master cylinders, brake calipers and brake lines.
